The Modular Layout Special interest group

The Bonn station by Kibri on the Marklin modular layout of the European Train Enthusiasts Great Lakes Chapter

From Humble Beginnings...

When the modular layout concept was first discussed by the handful of ETEGL members in 2000 they would never have imagined it would grow from its original eight-foot-square configuration to the impressive 26-foot by 34-foot layout shown in early 2016. But thanks to the efforts of a few creative modelers and a bunch of enthusiastic helpers, the layout continues to provide new scenery and functionality for the public it was built to educate.  From fantasy vignettes showing life in Europe to detailed trains displaying how this vital transportation network serves the people of that continent, the modular layout amuses and engages spectators young and old...

The Modular Layout

The majority of the members of the ETEGL participate in one or more public exhibitions of our modular H.O. scale layout, which features European trains and scenery.  Germany, Holland, Switzerland and France are all represented on the layout which showcases the wide variety of trains found across the European continent for the past 150 years.  From French bullet trains that traverse the layout at a scale 200 mph to colorful freight trains pulled by ancient steam locomotives, the variety of rolling stock displayed at every exhibition of the layout reflects the diversity of the interests of our members.  Although not every ETEGL member builds their own module, all are invited to attend the shows and displays throughout the year.  Spouses and kids are also heartily invited to attend!
